Woman With a Fan
Gustav Klimt · 1917
Why it's great
A woman in a bold pattern of red and gold looks out with a graceful pose, holding a fan. It was one of Klimt's last portraits, painted in 1917, shortly before his death. It was rediscovered in 2023 and sold for around $85 million. Its bright palette and decoration show his later style.

Gustav Klimt was born near Vienna, Austria, the son of a gold engraver, which may be why gold glitters in so many of his paintings. He lived his entire life in and around Vienna and co-founded the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke from tradition. He painted beautiful portraits, murals, and landscapes. He died in 1918 at age 55 after a stroke.
