Portrait of Wally
Egon Schiele Β· 1912
Why it's great
A young woman with red hair and a black dress sits sideways, looking out in a thoughtful way. Schiele painted his model Wally Neuzil, who lived with him in Vienna. After World War II, the painting was involved in a long legal fight about stolen art. It ended in 2010.

Egon Schiele was born in Tulln, Austria, and studied art in Vienna as a teenager. He was inspired by Gustav Klimt and developed a raw, angular and expressive drawing style. He lived in Vienna and in smaller Austrian towns. He died of the Spanish flu in 1918 at just 28, three days after his wife.
