Tree and House
Amedeo Modigliani · 1919
Why it's great
Modigliani is famous for portraits, but this rare landscape shows a small house and a tree in warm, simple colors. He painted it in 1919 in the south of France, where he went for his health. It is one of only a few landscapes he ever painted. It's a quiet glimpse of the artist outside his usual subjects.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
