Portrait of Paul Guillaume
Amedeo Modigliani · 1915
Why it's great
A dapper art dealer in a hat sits with a confident, slightly sly look. Paul Guillaume was one of the first people to sell Modigliani's art, and Modigliani painted him more than once. The portrait shows how an artist could turn a friend and supporter into a stylish, graceful shape. It hangs in a museum in Paris.

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, and moved to Paris in 1906. He painted and sculpted people with long necks, almond-shaped eyes, and elegant simplified faces. He was poor and ill throughout his short life and died in Paris at 35. Only after his death did his fame explode. Modigliani was born into a Sephardic Jewish family in Italy and was proud of his heritage all his life.
