View of Delft

Johannes Vermeer Β· 1661

Why it's great

The Dutch city of Delft sits across a canal under a gray sky, with a shaft of sunlight on the roofs, and a few people stand on the shore. Johannes Vermeer painted it in about 1660, and the French writer Marcel Proust called it the most beautiful painting in the world.
