Still Life with Cheeses, Almonds and Pretzels
Clara Peeters Β· 1615
Why it's great
Big wheels of cheese, a pile of almonds and a pretzel sit on a table, and in the shiny pewter jug you can see a tiny reflection of the artist. Clara Peeters painted it in about 1615, and she was one of the few women painting in the Netherlands.

Clara Peeters was a Flemish painter, born in Antwerp in about 1587. She was one of the first women to paint still lifes, with beautiful shiny dishes, cheese, flowers and food, and she sometimes hid a tiny reflection of herself in them. She died in about 1657.
