The Threatened Swan
Jan Asselijn Β· 1650
Why it's great
A huge white swan hisses, with its wings spread, to protect its nest from a dog, with a farmer in the back. Jan Asselijn painted it in about 1650, and it is said to be a symbol of a Dutch statesman standing up to enemies.
