Artemisia Gentileschi was an Italian painter born in Rome in 1593, the daughter of the painter Orazio Gentileschi. She was one of the first women to become a successful professional painter in Europe, and her powerful pictures often show strong women from the Bible and myths. She died in Naples in about 1653.
