Myself: Portrait – Landscape
Henri Rousseau · 1890
Why it's great
A man in a black coat and hat stands with a paintbrush and palette in front of a harbor and a ship decorated with flags. Rousseau painted himself as a proud artist in the world. The hot-air balloon and flags show his sense of fun. It's a charming self-portrait.

Henri Rousseau was born in Laval, France, and worked as a tax-and-toll collector, earning the nickname 'Le Douanier' (the customs officer). He taught himself to paint and began exhibiting in his forties. His jungle scenes, painted from visits to the Paris botanical garden, were mocked at first but later admired by Picasso and others. He died in Paris in 1910.
