The Last of the Buffalo
Albert Bierstadt · 1888
Why it's great
A wild herd of buffalo is hunted by Native hunters on horseback in a dramatic scene on the plains. Albert Bierstadt painted this in 1888, when the buffalo were nearly gone. It's a sad and powerful reminder of the near extinction of the animal. It hangs in the Smithsonian in Washington.
