Among the Sierra Nevada, California
Albert Bierstadt Β· 1868
Why it's great
Giant granite peaks and a glowing lake spread out in the high Sierra Nevada, with mist and golden light. Bierstadt painted this to show how large the American West was. Crowds in the East paid to see his paintings. It's a perfect example of the grand scale of Western painting.
