View of the Village
Frédéric Bazille · 1868
Why it's great
A young girl in a white dress sits in the shade of a tree, with a pretty village on a hill behind her. Bazille painted it at his family's home in Montpellier, in the south of France. The strong sunlight and shadows were new at the time. It's an early Impressionist masterpiece.
