Summer Scene
Frédéric Bazille · 1869
Why it's great
A group of bathers by a river, in the shade of trees, in the strong sun of a summer day. Bazille painted young men as they relaxed, in a bold, bright style. The colors and light were new. It's one of the first paintings of modern leisure.
