The Honourable Mrs Graham
Thomas Gainsborough Β· 1775
Why it's great
A woman in a white and blue dress, with a feathery hair style, stands in a landscape, as the wind sweeps her skirts, with a column behind her. Gainsborough painted a glamorous portrait of Mary Graham. It's one of the most elegant portraits in British art.

Thomas Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, a small town in England, and moved to London as a teenager to study art. He became one of Britain's most fashionable portrait painters, working in Bath and London. He secretly preferred painting landscapes, and he loved music. His elegant, feathery brushstrokes made his sitters seem alive.
