Ariadne Abandoned by Theseus

Angelica Kauffmann Β· 1774

Why it's great

A princess sits on a rocky shore, in despair, as the ship of Theseus sails away, and a little Cupid cries. Angelica Kauffmann painted the story of Ariadne with great feeling. She was one of the most famous women painters of the 1700s. It's an elegant and emotional painting.
