Boulevard Montmartre, Spring
Camille Pissarro · 1897
Why it's great
A wide Paris boulevard in spring sunshine is lined with trees in new leaf and busy with walkers and horse-drawn carriages. Pissarro painted a whole series of this boulevard in different seasons and weather. This one is bright and fresh. Together they show how one place can change all year.

Camille Pissarro was born on the island of St. Thomas in the Caribbean and moved to France as a teen. He was the oldest of the Impressionists and a father figure and teacher to many younger painters, including Cézanne. He painted farms, villages and city streets in France. He died in Paris in 1903. Pissarro came from a Sephardic Jewish family, and his background shaped his lifelong sympathy for ordinary working people.
