Over Eternal Quiet

Isaac Levitan Β· 1894

Why it's great

A church by a lake stands on a cliff beneath a huge, stormy sky, with a tiny figure. Levitan said this was his most important painting, a 'portrait of Russia.' The clouds are huge and the water dark. It's a very impressive landscape.
