Birch grove
Isaac Levitan · 1889
Why it's great
Slender white birch trees stand in a sunny grove, with patches of light falling on the grass. Levitan, a Jewish artist and a hero of Russian landscape painting, painted the trees with glowing green and gold. Birches are a symbol of Russia. The painting is bright, peaceful and fresh.
