Fresh Wind. Volga
Isaac Levitan Β· 1885
Why it's great
Sailboats lean in a stiff wind on the wide Volga River, under a big sky of fast-moving clouds. Isaac Levitan, a Jewish painter who grew up poor in Moscow, was one of Russia's greatest landscape painters. He painted the Volga in 1885 and captured the feeling of wind and open space. It shows how he made simple scenes powerful.
