Sappho and Alcaeus
Lawrence Alma-Tadema Β· 1881
Why it's great
Two ancient Greek poets, Sappho and Alcaeus, perform and listen on a marble terrace beside the blue sea. Alma-Tadema painted a sunny, perfect, imaginary Greece. Each person is shown in elegant detail. It's a lovely vision of a poet's world.
