Echo and Narcissus

John William Waterhouse ยท 1903

Why it's great

In the Greek myth, a vain young man falls in love with his own reflection, while the nymph Echo watches heartbroken. Waterhouse painted the dreamy, mossy pool in lovely detail. It's the origin of the words 'narcissist' and 'echo.' The painting is celebrated for bringing myth to life.
