Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts
Moscow's main museum of European art has masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh, in a classical building near the Kremlin. It is named after the poet Alexander Pushkin.
History of the museum
The museum was founded in 1912 by the professor Ivan Tsvetaev as a place for students to study casts of famous sculptures. After the revolution, the Soviet government gave it large collections of paintings seized from Russian collectors, including the Impressionist and modern paintings of Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov, which the Pushkin Museum shares with the Hermitage.
