Jealousy
Edvard Munch Β· 1895
Why it's great
A pale man stares out in the foreground of a garden as a couple stands behind him. Munch painted jealousy as a green-faced mood. The painting is more about feeling than action. It's a revealing look at a strong emotion.

Edvard Munch was born in Norway and grew up in Christiania (now Oslo), in a family troubled by illness and loss. He traveled in Europe, especially Germany and France, and used paint to express anxiety, love and loneliness. His most famous work, 'The Scream', is among the best-known images ever. He spent his last decades at his estate Ekely near Oslo and died in 1944.
