Empress Eugenie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting

Franz Xaver Winterhalter · 1855

Why it's great

The Empress of France sits on a flower-strewn lawn, with her ladies in pastel gowns gathered around, like in a garden party. Winterhalter was the favorite portrait painter of royalty across Europe. The picture has a dreamy, fairy-tale glow. It's a glimpse into royal life.
