Lake Suwa in Shinano province
Katsushika Hokusai Β· 1831
Why it's great
A tiny shrine on a rock sits in a lake, with Mount Fuji far away across the water. Hokusai created this woodblock print as part of his famous series of Fuji views. The calm lake and old pines are peaceful. It's a quiet scene in the middle of a famous series.

Katsushika Hokusai was born in Edo (now Tokyo) and worked as an artist for over 70 years. He made thousands of drawings and woodblock prints, including The Great Wave and the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. He changed his name dozens of times and said he hoped to get better until he was 110. He died in 1849, at about age 89.
