Le Café-concert aux ambassadeurs

Edgar Degas · 1876

Why it's great

A singer in a bright dress performs on stage in an outdoor concert garden at night, lit by gas lamps. Degas used the strong colors and shadows of stage lights. The painting was inspired by the Paris nightlife. It's a lively picture of entertainment.

About the artist

Edgar Degas

1834–1917 · born in Paris

Edgar Degas was born in Paris to a well-to-do family and lived there almost all his life. He's linked to the Impressionists, but preferred to work indoors, painting ballet dancers, racehorses, and women at their daily routines. He loved to catch unusual angles, as if a camera had snapped the scene. In old age his eyesight failed and he turned to sculpture.
