Nativity
Robert Campin Β· 1430
Why it's great
Mary kneels beside her newborn baby in a Flemish winter landscape, and the whole scene is painted in warm, lifelike detail. Robert Campin, the master of Tournai, painted it around 1430, and it is a fine early example of oil painting in the Netherlands.

Robert Campin was a painter from Tournai, in today's Belgium, born around 1375. He painted solid figures in down-to-earth rooms full of everyday things, and the great Rogier van der Weyden was probably his pupil. He died in 1444.
