Whistlejacket
George Stubbs Β· 1762
Why it's great
A magnificent chestnut horse rears up against a plain background, the size of life. Stubbs painted it for the Marquess of Rockingham, and it is thought that there was no background by design. His knowledge of horse anatomy is astonishing. It is the most famous horse painting in Britain.
