Eight Horses
Giuseppe Castiglione Β· 1729
Why it's great
Eight horses of different colors stand and pose in a calm landscape. Giuseppe Castiglione, known in China as Lang Shining, painted the emperor's favorite horses. His lifelike style, with shadows and shapes, was new for Chinese painting. It's a handsome picture of the emperor's stable.
