National Palace Museum
A vast museum in Taipei holds around 700,000 pieces of Chinese imperial art, from jade and bronzes to calligraphy and paintings, that once belonged to the emperors in the Forbidden City.
History of the museum
The Palace Museum opened in the Forbidden City in Beijing in 1925. When Japan invaded China, the treasures were packed in thousands of crates and moved around the country for 16 years. After the Chinese civil war, the Nationalist government took about 600,000 pieces to Taiwan in 1949, and the National Palace Museum opened in Taipei in 1965.
