Ohara Museum of Art
Japan's first museum of Western art, in the old merchant town of Kurashiki, has paintings by El Greco, Monet, Gauguin and Picasso.
History of the museum
The businessman Magosaburo Ohara founded it in 1930 as a memorial to the painter Torajiro Kojima, who was sent to Europe to buy art for him. Kojima brought back Monet's Water Lily Pond and El Greco's Annunciation, among other works, and so people in rural Japan could see European art.
