Tokyo National Museum
Japan's oldest and largest museum has the finest collection of Japanese art: samurai swords, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, screens, lacquer and Buddhist sculpture, in Ueno Park.
History of the museum
The museum was founded in 1872, only a few years after Japan opened to the West, and began as an exhibition of the nation's treasures. Its present main building opened in 1938, and it also has the Gallery of Horyuji Treasures. It holds around 120,000 objects, including 89 National Treasures.
