National Museum of Western Art
Tokyo's museum for European art, in a building by Le Corbusier, holds Monet's water lilies, Rodin's Gates of Hell and works from the Renaissance to the 20th century.
History of the museum
After the Second World War, France returned a collection of 375 works that the Japanese businessman Kojiro Matsukata had bought in Paris, on condition that a museum be built for them. Le Corbusier designed the museum, which opened in 1959 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
