City–Shtetl
Issachar Ber Ryback · 1917
Why it's great
A shtetl, a small Jewish town in Eastern Europe, is painted with colorful, geometric shapes. Issachar Ber Ryback was a Ukrainian-born Jewish artist who blended folk art with modern painting. He wanted to keep the memory of Jewish village life alive. It's a bright, modern picture of a vanished world.
