L'Incendie du quartier Saint-Jean à Québec, vu vers l'ouest

Joseph Légaré · 1845

Why it's great

A huge fire lights up the night sky over Quebec City, with people rushing through the street. Joseph Légaré witnessed the great fire of 1845 in Saint-Jean neighborhood and painted it with powerful color. It's one of Canada's earliest paintings of a disaster. It's a vivid record of the event.
