Mary Magdalene
Konstantinos Tzanes Β· 1700
Why it's great
Mary Magdalene looks down thoughtfully, with a jar and a cross, in a painting in the Greek Orthodox tradition. Konstantinos Tzanes painted it in the 1600s, in Venice, where Greek artists mixed their style with Italian art.

Konstantinos Tzanes was a painter from the Greek island of Crete, born in 1633. Like many Cretan painters, he moved to Venice, where he mixed the Greek icon tradition with Italian art. He died there in 1685.
