Nocturne: Blue and Gold – Old Battersea Bridge

James McNeill Whistler · 1872

Why it's great

A long wooden bridge rises as a shadowy silhouette in the dusk, with fireworks and a tiny boat below. Whistler was inspired by Japanese prints and used simple shapes and subtle tones. He painted the London night like a piece of music. It's a famous atmospheric painting.
