Self-portrait in front of a mirror
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec · 1882
Why it's great
A young man with glasses looks at himself in a mirror, painted in quick, rough strokes. Toulouse-Lautrec painted his own face as a student. The style is loose and sketchy. It's an early self-portrait.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into a noble family in Albi, France, but broken bones in childhood stunted his growth. He moved to Montmartre in Paris and painted the dancers, singers and cabaret stars of the Moulin Rouge. His bold posters helped invent modern advertising art. He died at 36, at his mother's château in southwestern France.
