Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)
The largest art museum in the western United States, with art from all over the world and from every era. Outside its entrance is Urban Light, a forest of 202 restored antique street lamps that has become a symbol of Los Angeles.
History of the museum
LACMA opened in 1965 on Wilshire Boulevard in an area called Miracle Mile, after it separated from the older Los Angeles County Museum of History, Science and Art, founded in 1910. Its first collections were helped by large gifts from wealthy collectors and Hollywood figures. The museum added the Pavilion for Japanese Art, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum and the glittering Urban Light in 2008. A new building is being constructed across the street.
