Vancouver Art Gallery
British Columbia's main art museum, in a grand former courthouse in the middle of downtown Vancouver, holds the world's largest collection of work by the painter Emily Carr.
History of the museum
The Vancouver Art Gallery opened in 1931 in a small building and moved to the old provincial courthouse, a neoclassical building redone by the architect Arthur Erickson, in 1983. Its collection of Emily Carr's paintings of Indigenous villages and wild forests came largely through gifts. A new building has been planned for decades.
