Card Players
Theo van Doesburg Β· 1916
Why it's great
Three men sit around a card table and a lamp in a picture that has been turned into flat colors and straight lines. Theo van Doesburg, the founder of the De Stijl magazine, painted this in 1916 on his way to pure abstraction.
