Kindred Spirits

Asher Brown Durand ยท 1849

Why it's great

Two men stand on a rocky ledge in the Catskill Mountains, gazing over a gorge with trees in autumn colors. Asher B. Durand painted the artist Thomas Cole and the poet William Cullen Bryant, two friends who loved nature. Cole had died, so the painting is a tribute. It's one of the most famous American landscapes.
