Proclamation of the Republic

Benedito Calixto · 1893

Why it's great

Soldiers gather in a square in Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889, as Brazil becomes a republic and ends its monarchy. Benedito Calixto, a Brazilian painter, painted the scene a few years later. The celebration was peaceful. It's an image of an important turning point.
