The Stonemason's Yard
Giovanni Antonio Canal · 1725
Why it's great
Workers cut and carry stones beside a canal in Venice, near a church, under a pale sky. Canaletto painted it in about 1725, and it is one of his most appealing pictures of everyday life.

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was born in Venice and painted its canals, palaces, and festivals with great precision. His views were popular with wealthy British visitors on their tours of Italy, and he lived in London for several years. His paintings are still the way many people picture Venice. He died in Venice in 1768.
