The Piazza San Marco in Venice
Giovanni Antonio Canal Β· 1723
Why it's great
A huge crowd walks across the square in front of the basilica of Saint Mark, with its domes and bell tower. Canaletto painted it in about 1723, and he made views of the city for tourists.

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was born in Venice and painted its canals, palaces, and festivals with great precision. His views were popular with wealthy British visitors on their tours of Italy, and he lived in London for several years. His paintings are still the way many people picture Venice. He died in Venice in 1768.
