The Entrance to the Grand Canal, Venice
Giovanni Antonio Canal ยท 1730
Why it's great
Gondolas and boats glide in front of the white church of Santa Maria della Salute under a bright blue sky. Canaletto painted views of Venice that travelers bought as souvenirs. The sparkling water and clear light are amazing. It's one of the most famous city views.

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was born in Venice and painted its canals, palaces, and festivals with great precision. His views were popular with wealthy British visitors on their tours of Italy, and he lived in London for several years. His paintings are still the way many people picture Venice. He died in Venice in 1768.
