The Molo, Seen from the Bacino di San Marco
Giovanni Antonio Canal Β· 1720
Why it's great
The waterfront of Venice sparkles in the sun, with the Doge's Palace, boats and the column of Saint Mark. Canaletto painted it in about 1720, and he was the great painter of Venice's views.

Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, was born in Venice and painted its canals, palaces, and festivals with great precision. His views were popular with wealthy British visitors on their tours of Italy, and he lived in London for several years. His paintings are still the way many people picture Venice. He died in Venice in 1768.
