Calouste Gulbenkian Museum
A peaceful modern museum in a garden in Lisbon holds the private collection of an Armenian oil businessman, with Egyptian, Islamic, European and Asian treasures.
History of the museum
Calouste Gulbenkian, an Armenian oil businessman, spent most of his life in Britain and France and settled in Lisbon in 1942. When he died in 1955 he left his collection and his fortune to a foundation in Portugal, and the museum opened in 1969. His collection includes paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens, Monet and Renoir.
