Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya
A grand palace on Montjuïc hill above Barcelona, famous for the best collection of Romanesque wall paintings in the world, rescued from tiny mountain churches of the Pyrenees.
History of the museum
The Palau Nacional was built for the 1929 World's Fair in Barcelona. The museum was founded in 1934 and moved into the palace in the 1990s. Many of the Romanesque murals were cut from church walls in the early 1900s and moved to Barcelona to save them from being sold abroad.
