Max Schmitt in a Single Scull

Thomas Eakins Β· 1871

Why it's great

A rower glides across the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia in the early morning, as a tiny figure of the artist rows in the distance. Eakins painted his friend, who was a champion. The sunlight on the water is gorgeous. It's among the first great American sports paintings.
